This week's vase is a hand painted tankard from Rouen, a gift from my sister on her return from a year in France when she worked there for a year whilst reading French at Uni. It is just the right size for a large arrangement. This is the last of the Chrysanthemum varieties bought new this year to make an appearance. Chrysanthemum Ruby Mound 21C is a dark burgundy red colour.
This close up gives a more accurate idea of the form and colour, which are superb. The plant has good long stems for cutting with the blooms nicely arranged on the stem.
I've paired the Chrysanthemum Ruby Mound with stems of golden Lonicera and a few stems of a grass which I was recently given, but with no name. If anyone has any idea of what it might be, your suggestion in the comments below would be helpful.

I love the rich burgundy colour, probably my favourite autumn hue. I believe your grass is Pennisetum alopecuroides. Have a lovely week!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that Eliza, I've just looked up the grass, and the form of the plant is very similar.
DeleteNoelle, I love the rich red of your chrysanthemum, my favorite color. Great vase as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susie, the tankard is quite large, but works wonderfully with larger flowers.
DeleteI have found with the hardy chrysanthemums I have got that finding long stems is hard, so your Ruby Mound sounds like a good bet - although the only new one I shall be getting for next year is Chatsworth, which you have featured previously. The lonicera is a great foliage plant and works well with your chrysanthemum and the newly-identified grass. I like to see a jug or mug/tankard used as a vase, and your sister's French gift is pretty. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteThank you Cathy, I really hope it is hardy, but I am going to lift it and put it in the shed to try to ensure I have it again next year.
DeleteOh 'Ruby Mound' is a deliciously dark colour Noelle. Presumably she's hardy š¤ The grass whatever it is looks most appealing and what a fine gift from your sister. My sister also did a languages degree - combined French and Italian and spent her year out between the two countries which she really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteJenny came to stay with us this year to escape the heat in Spain, and she was tickled pink to see that I was still using that vase after so many years. What a great opportunity your sister had going between those two beautiful countries.
DeleteTrying to get a comment to post...hope this works. Another deep red beauty in a wonderful vase!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you have problems posting Donna, and good for you this time. I moderate replies, as I don't want spurious links or scam type things posted before I can get rid of them.
DeleteBeautiful vase, love the chrysanthemums which look very much like dahlias. Great idea to combine them with Lonicera and Pennisetum.
ReplyDeleteThank you Annette, at least the slugs like chrysanthemum less than Dahlias.
DeleteThe chrysanthemum is luscious, Noelle. The Lonicera and grass stems give the arrangement just the right lift too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kris, it is wonderfully dark and mysterious, and the plant is robust with excellent health too.
DeleteThe tracery of the Lonicera is a wonderful contrast to the Chrysanthemums deep burgundy. Love a vase filled with memories. Amelia
ReplyDeleteThanks Amelia, the chrysanthemum being so dark does benefit with (I love your term) 'tracey'.
DeleteWhat a gorgeous, deep color. It makes me think of Dorothy's Ruby slippers.
ReplyDeleteInteresting you should say that, on a close up picture I took of one picture, there were the smallest of shiny particles on the inner petals. At first I thought it was pollen, but there are no centres on these flowers.
DeleteThat Chrysanthemum is a gorgeous colour Noelle! I do hope you can keep it through the winter. I have a couple with very small flowers, but nothing as dramatic as this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy, whatever chrysanthemums we can grow, what I like is that the blooms are at their best when everything else may be wanning.
DeleteSuch a beautiful color for a chrysanthemum, one of my favorites. And the tankard is very pretty, too!
