In a Vase on Monday - Jug of Kitchen Herbs


In a little Art Deco glass jug a few herbs from the garden make up a collection of flowers and foliage for today's In a Vase on Monday.  

Purple Sage, feathery fennel fronds, the lovely fury leaves of Apple Mint, purloined from the bees the first of the Chive flowers and what I was led to believe Winter Savoury.



Pelargonium Pink Capricorn is a delight.  It is a Scented Leaf Pelargonium, but I have yet to explore its use in the kitchen.  A few of the petals sprinkled over something pale and delicate such as a panna cotta would look pretty.




A few stems of the Rosemary which has not stopped flowering all winter, and in the front this lovely pink herb, all add a lovely floral scent in the Kitchen.  All winter I have been using the 'winter savoury'.  The strong flavour reminiscent of a robust thyme is superb with beans, and in Winter Stews.  Both of these are sustaining many of the bees and bumblebees in the garden.

    1. Thank you Amanda...some of it will be used for sure, and I think a the Pelargonium may yield a little cutting.

  2. Oh that's lovely, Noelle, and reminds us to look at herbs for our vases. MUST get some more applemint soon though - love its furry leaves! I think my Pink Capricorn is just coming into flower - I have just repotted all the pelargoniums in the Coop and I hope they will reward me for it

    1. I hope you show your Pelargoniums some time. The mint is lovely. Alison C gave me a piece in a little bouquet and smelling it I knew I had to get a plant for the garden.

  3. I love all those shade of pink together. My favorite color in flowers! The soft and multi shades of green compliment it so very nicely.

    1. Thank you Cindy. If you asked me some time ago whether I liked Pink, I would have said I prefer blue..but looking round the garden at the moment, pink predominates...

  4. Very pretty! Like Cathy, this post reminded me that I should include more herbs in my vases. Cut flowers pushed most of the herbs out of what used to be my vegetable garden but I think it's time to put things in balance by mingling some herbs with the flowers planted for cutting. I do have a lot of Pelargoniums scattered about my larger garden, though, as they accept our long hot, dry season.

  5. Your garden is fabulous Kris, and the range of plants you grow amazing. I am forever looking up plants that I have never seen, and can only imagine in growing in some fabulous collection here under glass. Your climate will sure to favour some of the Mediterranean herbs.

  6. This vase is very pretty and I'm sure it smells beautiful too. Lovely to have a vase that you can pick bits off and use. I'm sure you'll find a use for the pelargonium soon being so inventive.

  8. Oh how pretty. Just wish that I could smell all the plants too Noelle. I'm not sure but I think that you can use the leaves of scented pelargoniums in cakes. Will check tomorrow and will come back to you.
