In a Vase on Monday - Shadows

Shadows are getting longer, which means Autumn is upon us.  Its garden clearing time here, with annuals nearly over, some plants have cast shadows over others in the garden which has not been good.  Its time for me to take stock and decide adjustments, and preparing with hope for the garden next year.  The main hope being that the squirrels are not watching me plant my crocus bulbs over the next few days, and then coming to dig them up.

This morning first thing...the arrangement cast shadows on the wall as the low autumnal sun cast its light into the kitchen.  I love the silhouette...... the daisy shape stands out...if you want to see Daisies head over to Cathy's Blog.

The material for today's vase has all been selected recently or this time last year...but one appearing only because some bird must have used it for a perch, and snapped it, is a stem of Perovskia 'Blue Spire'.

During some down time over the last week, whilst we were in Wales, one of my best reads was The Sceptical Gardener by Ken Thompson, it is informative, with lots of leads for further exploration.   I've just ordered myself a new copy from Amazon.

  1. Your shadow photo is beautiful and the vase, of course. The book sounds interesting too.

  2. Those squirrels are sneaky, Noelle ;) I love the first photo, which looks like a painting. I'll have to see if the book is available in the US as it sounds as though it's right up my alley.

    1. Thanks Kris...I had to keep asking Mr S to move to capture the shadow as he was busy by the window getting breakfast ready!

  3. The shadow is wonderfully caught - so well done for noticing and recotding the phenomenon ('If nobody speaks of remarkable things'),Your selection of soft pastel blooms look just the part in this vase which neatly picks out their colours. The book looks an interesting read and I shall investigate further. Hope you had a restful break in Wales

  4. Lovely autumn vase. I must ask what that white flower with a pink rim is, on the left. A Gladiolus?

    1. Maybe you are jumping to next year, when I hope to plant a few gladiolus bulbs. It's a penstemon, which came as a cutting from my last garden.

  5. That's a lovely photo of the shadows... and your vase too. Great flower combinations. I'm looking up that book too - sounds useful. I've got a fairly minimalist vase this week - just lavender and eucalyptus. But I've mostly written about my wedding flowers from a year ago :-) love bec
