In a Vase on Monday - Perseverance

Its always good manners to mention that this weekly post owes its title to Cathy.  She hosts many gardeners' arrangements.  This week she has set a challenge for our 6th Anniversary next week...and I think my vase this week would fit the bill!  Do go and enjoy others if you have the time.

Perseverance: a well known motto used by my parents for all sorts of reasons and situations.  The first house they built was called 'Perseverance House'.

Without a cold snap the Fuchsias and the one Dahlia have been persevering despite the days of rain.  Yesterday was fairly sunny...but ended with very heavy rain by bed time.  Some herbaceous plants went into the doldrums during the hot dry summer, but have supplied fresh blooms recently.

In the vase:  Fuchsia Upright Delta's Sarah with the large white buds flushed pink which is as yet demure and hiding its blue petticoats; the small white  Fuchsia Hawkshead and the probably the last of small bloom of  white Dahlia Gallery Art Fair; Astrantia Major 'Sunningdale Variegated' is now showing its own in the garden.

Just to be certain in future that this is not a 'stored' picture from the summer...I set the conservatory time piece by it too!  Picture taken on 4th November at 7:49!

Whilst we were on the Gower...I read through our November Book for the Book Club...quite a page turner.

And since I have a little time waiting to read the next book, I picked up Alan Titchmarsh's Trowel and Error which I am enjoying...

All borrowed with gratitude from our local Library.

  1. I love the contents of your vase, particularly the astrantia. I like the pink at its centre. A very fresh and pretty collection! Amanda https://therunningwave.blogspot.com/2019/11/falling-apart-in-vase-on-monday.html

  2. It is quite deceptive in the first photo just how small the vase is! But so lovely and for November incredibly pleasing too. :)

  3. Yes, I can see you will have no problem in shrinking a vae for next week, and you have shown today that small vases with just a few blooms or buds can be every bit as attractive as anything larger or more elaborate - thank you for that. I know you like to have book recommendations and I have just read The Garden of Lost and Found which I would happily recommend to others

    1. I am so pleased that you liked The Garden of Lost and Found. I too recommended it and mentioned on IAVOM back in September.

  4. How lovely to have Astrantia flowering now. Did you cut it back in summer? Hope the front garden is progressing well. x

    1. They were divisions from the original plant that I had brought with me. I think it was too hot in the summer, or else they were growing their roots. They probably think it is spring with all the rain we have been having.

  5. Astrantia is on my list of holy grail plants, that is plants I greatly covet and don't seem to have a chance of growing in my climate. I tried growing it again this year but it was a complete failure. However, my 'Hawkshead' Fuchsia did relatively well through this year's mild summer, even if it looks sad at the moment.

    1. Well done on you regarding the Hawkshead Fuchsia...do take some cuttings and try it in different areas of the garden. I think if you have some deep shade that is moist, in your climate it will do quite well.

  6. Oh how great to have astrantias still in flower and what a fine companion it makes for the other occupants of your vase. I am off to investigate your book club forthwith. I don't know what I would do without my local library!

    1. Any recommendations you have Anna, are always welcome too. I love to support our library...Mr S downloads lots of books from the online section of the library, whereas I prefer to read from paper!!
